The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx

Workers of the World Unite! The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx.

Join Ahmed Shawki, editor of the International Socialist Review and author of Black Liberation and Socialism, and other activists for a discussion of Marx’s ideas and the fight for a socialist world.

SF: Is Global Revolution Possible?

2011 began with popular uprisings and revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa -- most notably in Tunisia and Egypt, where mass demonstrations forced out dictators who had held power for decades. By the summer the tide of revolt had spread to Greece and Chile; and in the Fall, the Occupy! movement took the U.S. by storm.

These developments have put a fundamental question back on the table for millions of people: is global revolution possible? If it is, what would it look like? And how can we win?

Join us for a discussion of these questions and others. Global revolution is not only possible -- it is necessary in order to win a world that puts human need ahead of profit.

Featuring:

She participated in the January 25th revolution from the first day, and has been in the U.S. since mid October, participating in conferences and teach-ins on the Revolution. She has also been active in the Occupy movement, particularly Occupy Wall Street, building solidarity actions with the Revolution and imparting lessons from her experiences.

Moments Captured During Egypt's Revolution
A photography exhibition by Shadi Rahimi

Tents. Tanks. Tear gas. Smoke. Soldiers. Rocks. Riot police. Peace signs. Fists. Fire. Flags. Guns. Graffiti. Blood. Martyrs. Military rule. Anarchy…

Through it all, Shadi Rahimi saw love amid uprising. Last year she was inspired to move to Egypt from Oakland to witness a revolution. She spent seven months experiencing a generation resist for big ideas that had shifted from concept to overwhelming demand: Freedom. Justice. Equality. Democracy.

At a photo exhibit Saturday, May 26 at Old Crow Tattoo and Gallery, she'll share photos to take you beyond the headlines - to feel why some are sacrificing it all for a different tomorrow.

SF: Nakba Commemoration Vigil

In 1948 nearly 800,000 Palestinians were uprooted from their lands and displaced across the world as a result of Zionist colonization. 532 villages were erased.

Today nearly 70% of Palestinians live in exile outside their historic homeland, prohibited from return. Hundreds of thousands live in refugee camps in surrounding Arab countries and in occupied Palestine. 5 million Palestinians still live under Israeli military occupation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and 20% of Israel's populations are Palestinians who live as second class citizens in the apartheid, racist state.

Today we commemorate the lives of our brothers and sisters who have been murdered while resisting displacement and occupation. Their memory inspires us to continue on resisting the Palestinian genocide.

We are calling on people of conscience to join us for a silent vigil to commemorate the Palestinian catastrophe, Al Nakba.
